4 health reasons why you should have plants indoors

Most of us would agree, plants always look great in our homes and offices. Just as important as the visual aspect of plants, however, is the health benefit they bring to us.

Here are four:

1. Cleaner air

Indoor plants have an amazing ability to clean our air – they literally extract the spores and bacteria in the air that surrounds us. Plants also release water into the air, raising the humidity. All these processes help us rebuff respiratory ailments that can easily invade our bodies. Some of the best plants for purifying our offices and homes are: Spider Plant, Aloe Vera, Snake Plant, Peace Lily and Chrysanthemums.

2. Improve your sleep

None of us have probably thought about having plants in our bedrooms, but it could be exactly what we need to improve our sleep.  Jasmine, Lavender and Gardenia plants have a dual action of relaxing and calming you, so you fall to sleep quicker, as well as improving the quality of your sleep.

3. Improves energy and performance

Unfortunately, fatigue and stress seem to be an accepted part of our modern day life.  We can minimise these symptoms simply by having plants close by us. Studies have confirmed having plants around helps to lower our heart rate and reduce blood pressure, all without taking any medication.

4. Generates happiness

Happiness is so important to our wellbeing.  Plants and flowers make us smile, they refresh a room and make us more positive about life in general.   Not every hospital patient can have a window overlooking a beautiful garden, but they can have ‘live greenery’ in their room. So next time you visit someone in hospital, take them a potted plant, their healing properties are important and they can take it home when discharged!
